Painters and photographers will be on the streets of Nanaimo on Sunday (Sept. 15)

Artists focused on Nanaimo heritage

Paint Out Shoot Out competition. The event sees painters and photographers draw a heritage building at random and then challenges the artists to capture the essence of the building. “Combining art and heritage is a natural as far as Nanaimo’s downtown historic buildings are concerned,” said Chris Sholberg, heritage and community planner for the City of Nanaimo. “The buildings make interesting subject matter for the artists and photographers, and seeing how the artists and photographers interpret the buildings from an artistic perspective, highlighting the buildings soul, so to speak, is definitely one of the high points of the event.” The competition is open to the public and pre-registration is encouraged. Cost to enter is $10 for Nanaimo Arts Council members and $12 for non-members. Artists gather at the Nanaimo Museum prior to 10 a.m. and draw their location from a list of heritage buildings. They then spend the day capturing the essence of their location, returning to the museum prior to 3 p.m. with presentation ready pieces for judging. Prize money is $125 for first place, $75 for second, and $50 for third place in two categories – painting and photography. Winners will also be drawn from the list of entrants for prizes including tickets from the Port Theatre and Crimson Coast Dance Society. Entry forms can be downloaded at www.nanaimoartscouncil.ca and pre-registration can be done at the Nanaimo Arts Council Gallery at Nanaimo North Town Centre.
