Western Edge Theatre

September 20, 2017

Western Edge Theatre’s popular Plays & Pie series returns Sat., Sept. 30th with “The Colony of Unrequited Dreams,” a play by Robert Chafe based on the sweeping, best-selling novel by Wayne Johnston.

Plays & Pie presents contemporary scripts in staged readings featuring some of the Nanaimo-area’s finest actors, as a complement to Western Edge’s mainstage season. And the readings in turn are accompanied by servings of pie and other delicious desserts.

“The Colony of Unrequited Dreams” is a highly imaginative re-telling of legendary Joey Smallwood’s campaign to bring “the great, small nation” of Newfoundland into Confederation. Dogged all along the way by the acerbic, alcoholic and entirely fictional character of journalist Sheilagh Fielding, Smallwood also struggles with his bitter, pro-independence father, and his feelings for Fielding, whom he may or may not love.

“The Colony of Unrequited Dreams” was first produced by the National Arts Centre earlier this year. The Globe and Mail calls it “the type of meaty yet moving work about this country that audiences should be hungry for” during this sesquicentennial year.

The staged reading features Ashton Arden, Tamara McCarthy, Barbara Metcalf, Frank Moher, and Erik Tully, with Western Edge artistic director Brian March at the helm. The event is a fundraiser for Western Edge, with the artists donating their talents. In a staged reading, the actors hold the script and have rehearsed once, which makes for a fun and lively performance, as they think fast on their feet to bring the play to life.

Plus there’ll be pie.

“The Colony of Unrequited Dreams” is presented at 7:30 pm on Sat., Sept. 30 at Kismet Theatre Academy (55 Victoria Rd., Nanaimo). All tickets are $10 at the door. Subscribers to Western Edge’s 2017-18 mainstage season, which begins Nov. 24th with the premiere of “Run in Fields” by Frank Moher, are admitted free.

Subscriptions and flex-passes for the season, starting at just $44 for all four mainstage plays, are on sale now at westernedge.org or by phone at 250-816-6459. In addition to free admission to Plays & Pie events, subscribers enjoy savings of over 20% on the cost of individual tickets to mainstage productions, and avoid any additional processing fees.

Western Edge Theatre’s 2017-18 Season is generously sponsored by Romper Room Indoor Rock Climbing Centre and the Nanaimo News-Bulletin. It is also made possible by support from the City of Nanaimo and the Province of BC.
