Presented by The Nanaimo Conservatory of Music ("NCN")
“What a pianist. What a performance. What an experience.” (The Herald, Scotland)
World renowned pianist Angela Hewitt will perform at the Port Theatre in her only West Coast concert this year, in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. Canadian-born Angela Hewitt has performed with major orchestras in Europe, Asia, and North America.
She has recorded works by Schumann, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Liszt, and others, and is best known for her interpretation of Bach. She has been described as “one of the record glories of our age” (The Sunday Times.) Winner of numerous piano awards, she has also been named a Companion of the Order of Canada and an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. As a tireless promoter of the arts, Ms Hewitt launched the Trasimeno Music Festival in Italy and is an ambassador for “Orkidstra” a social development program in Ottawa’s inner city.
For her Nanaimo performance, Ms Hewitt will lend her remarkable colour, distinctive voice, and sparkling clarity to works by Bach, Beethoven (Moonlight Sonata), Scarlatti, Ravel, and Chabrier.
Since 1999, the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music has been presenting internationally acclaimed Canadian pianists as part of its mandate to further an appreciation of both classical music and of Canada’s top performers. Through these concerts, the NCM, a not for profit organization, raises funds for music instruction programs, bursaries, and scholarships.
As well as her concert at The Port Theatre, Ms Hewitt will be giving a master class on Saturday 7 October (4:00 – 6:00 pm) at VIU to several advanced piano students. Observers can purchase tickets to the master class through the NCM. The master class will be held in VIU Building 320, Room 105 (“Choral Room.”)
