Origin Opus #1

The Port Theatre

This the inaugural Origin Matinee Series.  Building on the success of last year’s Symphony Soundbites (which continue this year), VI Symphony will be premiering their first-ever matinee series, “Origin Opus”.This show provides the full quality of the main program – with the performance of the entire orchestra – but without the concerto or soloist pieces.  For the first foray, matinee-goers will be treated to Shostakovich’s Ballet Suite No. 1 and Stravinsky’s thrilling Firebird Suite.

A Fiery Opening - The Vancouver Island Symphony’s season opener

Saturday, October 21, 2017, at 7:30 pm.

The Port Theatre

The Symphony season gets off to a Fiery Opening with the performance of The Bastion: Sesquie for Canada 150, a tribute both to Confederation and a city landmark. Continuing the historical theme, the orchestra will mark the 100th Anniversary of the October Russian Revolution with lyricism, rhythm, and flamboyance as guest artist, Corey Hamm, performs Prokofiev’s lush Piano Concerto no. 3 in C major, op. 26, followed by Shostakovich’s smiling, humorous Ballet Suite no. 1 and then comes to a crackling climax with Stravinsky’s exciting, groundbreaking, tuneful The Firebird: Suite.
