Nanaimo Concert Band History:

Well… very much has happened to this band in 145 years but we will give you a brief sketch.  In 1872 the fast growing mining town of Nanaimo started up a colliery Brass Band under the leadership of Reverend James Reynard who had just moved to Nanaimo from the gold rush town of Barkerville.  The Band in the 1920’s was nicked named by the press as the “Nanaimo Silver Cornet Prize Band” in honour of its successes in competition.  In 2001 the band came home from a national competition in Ottawa with the Gold award after competing at the highest level of Concert Band music.  One thing that hasn’t changed over the band’s history is its ability to attract a great group of talented musicians.  Our Band is known as the oldest continuously operating band in Canada.
