Art Lab offers two Saturday Studio sessions tailored to kids ages 5-7 and 8-12. Participants will connect with artists, experiment with materials, learn new techniques, and have fun with art making.

April 7 - Art Investigation Fulhame's Map

Saturday Studio kids will embark on an investigative tour of our new exhibition in the gallery Fulhame's Map! With pencils, clipboards and camera in hand we will begin our new year long inquiry How can we speak differently? We will learn about how these artists speak through the language of photography in this exhibition, choose an artwork and respond with blind and observational drawings.

April 14 - Shxathustun 'e'et - Picture this!

Saturday studio artists will explore ways we can transform images by adding splashes of watercolour to large black and white images of Nanaimo's unique landscapes. We will experiment and include text of Hul'q'umi'num expressions of respect and togetherness as we imagine new ways of picturing our community.

April 21 - Colour, Geometry and Pattern Collage!

Inspired by Jessica Eaton's stunning large format photographs in our exhibition Fulhame's Map we will create images loaded with shape, pattern and colour. We will cut, collage and play with colourful geometric shapes to learn about pattern and repetition to create colourful images to take home!

April 28 - Maynard, Montage and the Portrait

Artists speak in different ways and use many languages including photography. Hannah Maynard's (1834-1918) experimental self portraits in our exhibition Fulhame's Map will be the starting point for our photo projects. We too will experiment with photography to create our own innovative self portraits using props and montage to tell new and imaginative stories.

PD Day Art Camp

Friday, May 11, 9am-2pm

Supplies included, bring lunch, snack and water

$30 per child, $55 for two siblings per day

Registration requried

Ages 5-12

Together we'll explore the exhibition Fulhame's Map to look closely at the artworks. Back at Art Lab, we'll hear a Snuneymuxw story about a young woman who goes stilukw (strawberry) picking and learn about the annual community celebration this story inspired. Based on our observations in the exhibition, we'll create our own self portraits, tracing silhouettes on paper. We'll embelish these with a stilukw photo montage, based on photos from Nanaimo Art Gallery's indigenous species and plants.

Young artists will explore a variety of approaches to art making and asking the question "How can we speak differently?" Inspired by our summber exhibition The Orchids/Had The Look Of Flowers That Are Looked At, we will design, draw, photograph, paint, collage, and build using the traditional and contemporary approaches to art making. Taught by regional artists, Summer Art Camps are a fantastic way to inspire learners to explore and experiment.
