The Place You Already Are: Poetry as Medicine, a one day circle of writing, connection and renewal with Mary Anne Moore

“Poetry can carry a burden,” poet Lorna Crozier has said. Whether you are new to poem writing or a seasoned pro, you will have an opportunity for replenishment and an honouring of your voice through the reading and writing of poetry. Begin with a memory, a theme or a few words from a poem and make a discovery in the writing of your own. “Poems are maps to the place where you already are,” poet Jane Hirshfield wrote. There are many ways to tell your story; poem-making is one of them. A labyrinth walk, where everything is a metaphor, will offer calm, rebalance and insight.
Mary Ann Moore brings her passion for poetry and for writing as a spiritual practice to the circles she offers. As a poet, writer and circle leader, she has twenty years of experience writing in community and finds great delight in seeing people awaken their creative potential. As well as day-long circles at Bethlehem Centre and elsewhere, Mary Ann offers six-week women’s writing circles called Writing Life. Mary Ann’s poetry, fiction and personal essays have appeared in chapbooks, literary journals, websites, anthologies, on CD and in a full-length book of poems, Fishing for Mermaids (Leaf Press, 2014). She writes a blog at www.apoetsnanimo.ca and offers a mentoring program called Writing Home: A Whole Life Practice which you can learn more about on her website: www.maryannmoore.ca.
