Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.

"Shout-out to the artists in our community who are also socially- and politically-engaged. They perform double-duty in making the lives of everyone who lives in and around Nanaimo better. Mercedes Courtoureille, who's featured in Schmooze's upcoming production of "Chicago," has been a smart and empathetic supporter of Nanaimo DisconTent City, and so, of course, has been targeted by those who'd like to see its residents sent back to the streets and bushes. One has even suggested "she should not be performing in a city facility." (He's a little confused, though; "Chicago" is at VIU.) Want to show your appreciation for what Mercedes is doing? One way would be to make a donation of food, money or time to the tent city. Another would be to buy your tickets to "Chicago" right now!"
