Twelve authors are on the short list for a new short fiction contest sponsored by the Federation of British Columbia Writers.

“We were very pleased with the response to this new contest and the exposure it can bring to an outstanding group of BC authors,” said Ann Graham-Walker, Federation of British Columbia Writers President.

The short list is:
Jim Bottomley for “Running with Salmon”
Chelsea Comeau for “Badlands”
Derek Hanebury for “The Mercy of Saints”
Abhishek Manilal for “Thunderstorms”
Jeanine Manji for “Lucky Day”
Kay McCracken for "Stayin' Alive"
Glenn Mori for “One More Day”
David Reichheld for “Let Morning Bring Me”
Susan Smith-Josephy for “Daddy's Game”
Natalie Southworth for “Microburst”
Sheila Thomas for “Rewind”
KT Wagner for “Cabin Fever”

“It was completely my privilege to read these entries and everyone on the short list deserves a tip of the hat for some great writing,” said BC Short judge Eileen Cook. “It can be a character, a vivid description or a twist of the plot, but overall what I’m looking for is an element that draws me in and keeps me flipping pages eager to know more." Cook is an award-winning novelist and a multi-published author with novels in eight languages. Her books have been optioned for film and TV. She is a popular speaker at conferences both in the U.S. and in Canada, provides writing/editorial coaching, and is a mentor/instructor for the Simon Fraser University Writer’s Studio, The Write Potential and The Creative Academy.

“We are delighted with the calibre and scope of writing that came in from around the province and world,” said Cynthia Sharp, Federation of British Columbia board director and coordinator of the BC Short contest.

Winners will be announced on July 30, 2018. First prize is $350 and the winning entry will be published in WordWorks, the magazine of the Federation of British Columbia Writers. The B.C. Short, a competition for original, unpublished short stories, 1,200 - 2,000 words, invited fiction submissions from around the world. The contest closed on June 1st.
