This particular concert will be featuring several special moments that you will want to be in attendance for. The biggest one is that our Music director, Mr. Gerry Klaassen, will conduct his last concert at the Port Theatre, after 22 years on the NCB podium! Gerry is retiring from the band and he and his wife are moving to Victoria to be with family. This won't be the very last time up with the band as he will be directing our Christmas Concert on December 9th. But this concert is going to be a "Wow, I am sure glad I came ! " performance. With this Special Fall Concert Gerry Klaassen has put together one of his best ever entertaining programs ! Gerry is going out with a bang. Literally, with the 1812 Overture ! Of course there will be light hearted and fun music like a Frank Sinatra medley. Another special moment at the concert will be two of the Nanaimo's finest Bagpipers joining the band in some traditional Scottish music. There will some other surprises as well but we would hate to give everything away, what is the fun in that ?…..so you will just have to come out and see what will happen. We hope you will join us for this memorable concert.

Nanaimo Concert Band History:
Well…..so very much has happened to this band in 146 years but we will give you a brief sketch. In 1872 the fast growing mining town of Nanaimo started up a colliery Brass Band under the leadership of Reverend James Reynard who had just moved to Nanaimo from the gold rush town of Barkerville. The Band in the 1920’s was nicked named by the press as the “Nanaimo Silver Cornet Prize Band” in honour of its successes in competition. In 2001 the band came home from a national competition in Ottawa with the Gold award after competing at the highest level of Concert Band music. One thing that hasn’t changed over the band’s history is its ability to attract a great group of talented musicians. Our Band is known as the oldest continuously operating band in Canada.
